Welcome to Dystopia Recordings.
My name is Ronald Dangl. I am a producer, mixing, and mastering engineer based in Austria with 20+ years of industry experience under my belt. My journey began in the mid-90s with a guitar in my hand, cutting my teeth touring all over Europe with various bands.
In 2003, I enrolled at SAE College Vienna, eventually graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Production. During those years, I transitioned into the world of live sound, which eventually led to a nearly 8-year tenure as the head sound engineer and booker for the renowned venue SUB in Wiener Neustadt which sadly is no longer with us.
The Foundation
During time in college I started to work as a studio assistant for Alex „Feia“ Thomann who later became a big name in Austria as the Producer / Mixer of Austrian Bands like Bilderbuch, Francis International Airport, Kreisky, Cari Cari, Beatstakes, etc
In this short span of time I learned more from assisting Alex in the Studio than I did during my whole college time tbh.
It laid the foundation for my philosophy: I never wanted this to be a "9-to-5" daily business. For me, it’s all about passion, authenticity, and raw energy.
From Tapeattack to S.T.R.E.S.S.
In 2009, I founded my first studio, "tapeattackstudio." While it was a fantastic playground, it soon became too small for the scale of productions I envisioned. A turning point came in 2013 when the band LEHNEN asked me to record their upcoming album.
Seeking a raw, big-room sound, I decided to contact my friend Tom Zwanzger to rent out his place and move the production to S.T.R.E.S.S. Studio Graz.
We recorded the acclaimed album „Reaching Over Ice and Waves,“ which marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship with that studio. Over the following years, I returned to S.T.R.E.S.S. to record nearly 20 records for bands like Sex Jams, Mile Me Deaf, Dead End Friends, and BOG.
I always love returning to that hidden gem in the south of Austria whenever a project requires that specific energy.
Collaborations & Credits
In 2021i also frequently teamed up with Max Perner (Producer and drummer for Garish and Thees Uhlmann). Since Max and I have known each other for a long time, it was a privilege to assist him in the studio on projects for artists like Garish, Bernhard Eder, Homonym Robi Faustmann and many more. A personal highlight was working with the one and only Thees Uhlmann, where I even had the honor of contributing guitars to a track for his cinema debut of "Sophia, der Tod und ich".
The Dream: Dystopia Recordings
During the pandemic, I moved to the countryside south of Vienna and finally realized a long-held dream: a dedicated, uncompromising mixing and mastering room in my own home. In late 2023, with the expertise of studio designer Harald Pairits, this dream became a reality. Together, we created an acoustically pristine environment designed specifically for high-end sonics.
But to me, it’s about more than just acoustics—it’s about the vibe. My vision was to create a space that serves as a homage to the Heritage Studios of a golden era—think Electric Lady in NYC or Sunset Sound in LA.
I love digging deep into sounds, structures, and sonic landscapes to tell a story.
Let’s tell yours.
